I’m often asked, "What is silver clay"?
Silver clay is essentially powdered silver combined with an organic binder and water. The binder holds the particles together, making it pliable like regular clay. The clay is then molded, sculpted, textured, and shaped.
Once the desired shape is achieved, the clay is allowed to dry, and then fired using a kiln or a torch. The firing process burns away the binder, leaving behind a solid piece of silver.
The end result is 99.9% silver, as opposed to Sterling Silver, which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, which makes sterling harder.
All materials used to join the pieces together are made from sterling silver. All ear wires used are made from sterling silver, but can be switched out to surgical steel if needed.
Stay tuned for lots more designs to come in silver clay. This medium is new to me, and I am still learning. I look forward to adding more beautiful stones to my work, so check back often for exciting new additions.
