Pit Fired Clay

These one-of-a-kind pieces are crafted from traditional pottery clay—stoneware and earthenware. The clay is first rolled into slabs, carefully cut and shaped, then left to dry before being fired in a kiln.

That’s when the magic begins.

Each fired piece is dipped in a special solution and layered inside cookie tins along with organic materials such as leaves, seeds, feathers, and bits of metal. The tins are placed into a fire pit for several hours. As the fire intensifies, the organic elements begin to fume, leaving behind striking and unpredictable impressions on the clay surface. No two pieces are ever the same, and I never know exactly what I’ll find when I open the tins—but the results are always beautiful. A clear sealer is applied to enhance and preserve the vivid colors and markings.

This process is not only creative but incredibly joyful. It often includes time around the fire pit with friends, making it a shared experience. Opening the tins the next day is like unwrapping nature’s own artwork. The depth and richness of color in these pieces are difficult to capture in photos—many people mistake them for metal or stone because of their unique finish.

Once complete, the clay elements are assembled into jewelry using a variety of embellishments, including charms, beads, and decorative clasps. Some of these accents are handcrafted by me from silver clay, while others are collected during my travels.

All connection materials are made from stainless steel, which is durable and tarnish-resistant. Ear wires are made from surgical steel for comfort and hypoallergenic wear. Necklaces are strung on suede or leather cords in black or brown, and cord lengths are always customizable. If you prefer a different length or an alternative material, feel free to message me—I’m happy to make adjustments when possible.
